Sonnet Van Doren

Hometown: Kirkwood, CA

Major: undeclared (likely Earth Systems)

Three things I love to do at Stanford outside of class: fountain hopping, exploring the on campus natural spaces (cactus garden, farm), cheering on Stanford sports teams

I could talk all day about: Invasive species, Lake Tahoe, sweet treats, skiing, Cars (the movies), Leave No Trace, my dog Iggy, camping, Kirkwood, film photograhy.

I would love to connect with guests who work in fields related to: environmental sciences, ocean and/or freshwater ecosystems, geology, sustainability, clean energy, and environmental justice

Biosketch: Sonnet is a local to the Lake Tahoe Basin. She grew up in Alpine County which has the smallest population in California, and graduated with the smallest class ever (six people) from George Whittell High School in Zephyr Cove, Nevada. During middle and high school, she volunteered as a tour guide at the Tahoe Environmental Research Center in Incline Village and worked as a ski instructor at Kirkwood Resort. She also spent one summer working for the forest service maintaining and repairing trails around Lake Tahoe, and another summer serving as a Tahoe Ambassador, helping promote safe and sustainable practices around the lake for both visitors and community members. She first discovered Sierra Camp when her girl scout troop went camping on the other side of Fallen Leaf Lake when she was seven years old, so working as the camp naturalist this summer has been a dream of hers for over a decade!
